Flying drones in Switzerland

If you're planning to fly in Switzerland, make sure to check local drone laws first.

If you're not sure which rules apply, just read this short summary!
Keep in mind, it is just a summary, not legal advice. Stay safe and always follow the local regulations when flying.

  • Visual Line of Sight Required

    Always maintain direct visual contact with your drone. Flying beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) requires special authorization.

  • Maximum Flight Altitude

    Maximum altitude is 120m above ground level for drones weighing less than 250g, and 150m for drones between 250g and 30kg.

  • Distance from People

    Do not fly over gatherings of people (defined as 24 or more persons). Maintain a safe horizontal distance of at least 30m from uninvolved persons.

  • No-Fly Zones

    Respect restricted areas including airports (5km radius), heliports (2km radius), nature reserves, and military installations. Check FOCA maps before flying.

  • Registration Requirements

    Drones over 250g must be registered with FOCA (Federal Office of Civil Aviation). Operators must display their registration number on the drone.

  • Insurance Requirement

    Liability insurance with minimum coverage of 1 million CHF is mandatory for drones weighing over 500g.

  • Night Flying Restrictions

    Flying at night requires special authorization unless the drone weighs less than 250g and stays below 120m.

  • Cross-Border Flights

    Flying across international borders is prohibited without prior authorization from both countries' aviation authorities.

  • Pilot Competency

    For drones between 250g and 25kg, pilots must complete required training and obtain an EU drone certificate if flying in open category A1/A3.
